Question 1

What are the main advantages of an air source heat pump in Scotland?

Accepted Answer

Air source heat pumps deliver high efficiency, produce less carbon than gas heating in Scotland, last 20–25 years (vs 12–15 for gas boilers), and cost less to run when replacing oil or LPG. They also require no fuel delivery, have no combustion risk, and are eligible for smart off-peak electricity tariffs.

Question 2

What are the main disadvantages of air source heat pumps?

Accepted Answer

The main drawbacks are: higher upfront installation cost, requirement for adequate radiator surface area at lower flow temperatures, need for a larger hot water cylinder, modest outdoor unit noise (40–55 dB), and smaller running cost savings vs gas compared to oil/LPG. A heat pump also requires a fundamental shift in controls understanding from a gas boiler.

Question 3

Is an air source heat pump worth it in Scotland?

Accepted Answer

For most Scottish homes replacing oil or LPG, yes. The strongest financial case is for properties on oil, LPG, or direct electric heating. Future-proofing against gas phase-out strengthens the case for all homes. Priced at survey and confirmed on your written quotation.

Question 4

Can I use existing radiators with a heat pump?

Accepted Answer

Possibly. Existing double-panel K2 radiators often work at heat pump flow temperatures of 42–50°C. Single-panel K1 radiators in main rooms typically need replacing. The only way to know for certain is a room-by-room heat loss calculation. In well-insulated post-2000 homes, up to 70% of existing radiators may be retained.
