Question 1

Do air source heat pumps work in Scotland's cold climate?

Accepted Answer

Yes, absolutely. Modern heat pumps work efficiently down to -25°C. Scotland's average winter temperature of 3-5°C is well within optimal operating range. Heat pumps are proven technology in Norway, Sweden, and Finland—countries much colder than Scotland. The technology is specifically designed for cold climates.

Question 2

How much do air source heat pumps cost in Scotland?

Accepted Answer

Priced at survey. The exact cost depends on property size, existing system, and any necessary upgrades. Confirmed on your written quotation.

Question 3

What funding is available for heat pumps in Scotland?

Accepted Answer

Any funding is checked at your survey. We install through MCS-certified partners.

Question 4

Will I need to replace my radiators for a heat pump?

Accepted Answer

Not always. Underfloor heating works perfectly with heat pumps. Modern double or triple-panel radiators usually work well with minimal upgrades. Single-panel radiators typically need replacing in main rooms. Heat pumps work at lower flow temperatures (40-50°C vs 60-80°C for boilers), so adequate radiator surface area is key. A heat loss survey determines exact requirements.

Question 5

How efficient are air source heat pumps compared to gas boilers?

Accepted Answer

Heat pumps are 300-400% efficient (COP of 3-4), producing 3-4 units of heat for every unit of electricity consumed. Gas boilers are only 85-95% efficient. This makes heat pumps fundamentally more efficient, which is why running costs are lower despite electricity being more expensive per unit.

Question 6

How much can I save with a heat pump in Scotland?

Accepted Answer

Savings depend on your property, insulation, and energy tariff. Confirmed on your written quotation after the survey.

Question 7

Do I need planning permission for a heat pump in Scotland?

Accepted Answer

Usually no. Heat pumps are generally permitted development in Scotland. Exceptions include installations within 1 metre of a boundary, in conservation areas, near listed buildings, or on buildings over 2 storeys. Your installer will confirm whether planning permission is required for your specific situation.

Question 8

How long does heat pump installation take in Scotland?

Accepted Answer

A standard heat pump installation in Scotland takes 2-4 days. This includes removing the old system, installing the heat pump and hot water cylinder, connecting to existing radiators, commissioning, and handover training. If radiator upgrades or additional electrical work is needed, add 1-2 days.

Question 9

Do heat pumps work in very cold Scottish weather?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Modern heat pumps are designed to work efficiently down to -25°C. Scotland rarely falls below -10°C even in the Highlands, meaning heat pumps operate well within their rated range throughout Scottish winters. Efficiency decreases slightly in extreme cold but the system continues to heat your home effectively.

Question 10

Is my Scottish home suitable for a heat pump?

Accepted Answer

Most Scottish homes are suitable. Best candidates have reasonable insulation (EPC D or better), space for an outdoor unit and hot water cylinder, and either modern radiators or willingness to upgrade. Properties on oil, LPG, or electric heating benefit most financially. A professional assessment determines the specifics for your property.
